Career Shift framework
The Three Zones Framework
Most careers are not simply safe from AI or at risk from AI. They are a mix of durable human work, work that gets stronger with AI, and work that is steadily becoming automatable. This framework is how Career Shift evaluates that mix.
Resistant
Human judgment, empathy, trust, and originality remain central.
- Therapists building trust and reading nuance in a conversation
- Leaders resolving conflict and aligning multiple stakeholders
- Nurses adapting care in ambiguous real-world situations
Augmented
AI increases speed and range, but human oversight still matters.
- Analysts using AI to summarize data before applying judgment
- Product managers drafting options before stakeholder review
- Marketers accelerating research, drafts, and experimentation
Vulnerable
Routine, repetitive, and rules-based tasks face the most pressure.
- Basic documentation, formatting, and first-pass copy generation
- Simple reporting or status updates with little interpretation
- Standardized intake, scheduling, or low-complexity support flows
How to use it
The point of the framework is not to label a role as doomed or safe. It is to find where your leverage is moving. If a role has a large Resistant core and a strong Augmented zone, that usually means the best strategy is to become unusually effective with AI while deepening the human skills that remain hard to replace.
If a role has a large Vulnerable zone, the answer is usually not panic. It is specialization. Shift time away from routine tasks and toward work that requires judgment, ambiguity handling, relationships, or higher-stakes decision-making.
