How the Skills Gap Analysis Works

Career transitions fail most often because of invisible skill gaps — the capabilities your target role demands that your current role never developed. This tool makes those gaps visible, with two ways to use it.

Personal Assessment lets you rate yourself on concrete skills (SQL, stakeholder management, clinical assessment) for a target role, then shows you exactly where you fall short and what to do about it. Compare Two Roles shows how fulfillment dimensions differ between any two careers, based on research across 28 professions — including how each maps to our Three Zones framework for AI resilience.

What the Results Mean

Skills to Develop

Dimensions where your target role scores significantly higher than your current role. These represent the capabilities you'll need to build through training, projects, or experience.

Strengths You Bring

Dimensions where your current role has built stronger capabilities than the target requires. These are your transferable advantages — the skills that make you a differentiated candidate.

AI Resilience Shift

How the balance of Resistant, Augmented, and Vulnerable tasks changes between roles. A shift toward more Resistant and Augmented work means greater long-term job security.

Making the Most of Your Analysis

  • Focus on the biggest gaps first — a 30%+ gap in a single dimension is more actionable than three 10% gaps
  • Leverage your strengths — transferable advantages are how you differentiate yourself from candidates who started in the target field
  • Consider AI resilience — a transition that reduces your Vulnerable zone exposure gives you both a new career and better long-term security
  • Read the full profiles — each AI Impact Profile breaks down the role task-by-task with specific skills to build

Frequently Asked Questions

How many roles can I compare?

You can compare any two of our 28 profiled roles. The personal assessment mode is available for all 28 roles with detailed skill-level data.

What are the 10 fulfillment dimensions?

Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose, Creativity, Analytical Rigor, Social Connection, Variety, Structure, Influence, and Building. Each measures a different aspect of what makes work fulfilling and what skills a role demands.

How is this different from the career quiz?

The career quiz measures your personal profile and matches you to roles. The skills gap tool compares two specific roles to show what you need to develop for a targeted transition.

What does AI Exposure mean?

AI Exposure (0-100%) measures how much of a role's work is affected by AI capabilities. Higher exposure doesn't necessarily mean the job is at risk — it depends on whether tasks fall in the Augmented zone (AI makes you better) or the Vulnerable zone (AI can replace the work).
